We work with Ukrainian and foreign archives that preserve materials on the history of Jewish communities.

Reviews

Jewish presence in the Ukrainian lands has a centuries-long history

Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Drohobych, Kamianets-Podilskyi, as well as hundreds of small towns in Podillia, Volyn, Halychyna and the Dnipro region, were important centers of Jewish life, education, crafts and trade. It was here that the rich Jewish history of Ukraine took shape — from medieval communities to modern shtetls and major centers of Ashkenazi culture.
When researching the genealogy of Jews in the Ukrainian lands, it is essential to take into account the specifics of the historical context: frequent changes of borders and administrative divisions, the different languages of the sources (Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, Polish, German), the tradition of religious marriages, distinct Jewish naming systems, as well as the large-scale loss of documents in the twentieth century as a result of the Holocaust, wars and repressions.
Specialized Jewish genealogical research in Ukraine is, above all, the ability to read sources in context. We bring together archival collections, Jewish vital record books, digital databases, memoirs, maps and international Jewish genealogy resources in order to reconstruct as accurately as possible the history of your Jewish family and bring its voices back into the historical record.
